We were told one exists. We searched for eleven weeks. We found a man who scrolls slowly, which is not the same thing, and he knows it.

Subject: withheld by request, which he made in writing, citing a clause
Location: a coffee shop of his choosing, chosen — he said — for its posted policies
Duration: scheduled for one hour; see below

#The search

The claim reached us the way these claims do: secondhand, at a party, presented as
mythology. A friend of a friend reads them. All of them. The whole agreement. We have
chased thinner leads — we once spent an entire investigation
failing to identify a man in a pink ski mask — so we
committed. Eleven weeks. We interviewed four pretenders: two skimmers, one man who reads
only the section headings aloud in a lawyer voice, and one woman who reads the privacy
policy, which is adjacent but, as she told us herself with real sadness, "not the same
church."

Week eleven produced the subject. He was verified by a witness who watched him decline a
software update at a moment of genuine inconvenience, on the grounds that the new terms
"changed the arbitration language." The witness said the room went quiet. We booked the
interview.

#The interview

He arrived early, read the release we'd brought, and made two amendments in the margin. We
agreed to them. We want it noted that we agreed to amendments on our own paperwork within
ninety seconds of meeting him.

Asked when it started, he named a specific afternoon in 2011 — an update to a music
service's agreement, 54 pages. "I was going to click through. Everyone clicks through. And I
had this thought I've never gotten rid of: everyone clicks through. Somewhere in the world
there has to be one person who actually reads it. And I looked around the room, and I
realized nobody else was going to be that person."

He read all 54 pages. It took most of a weekend. "Was anything in there?" we asked. "No,"
he said, with the calm of a man who has made peace. "There almost never is. That's not why
you read it."

We asked why you read it. He looked at us the way you look at someone who has asked what
the point of a lighthouse is when almost no ships crash. "So that it's read," he said.
"A contract nobody reads isn't an agreement. It's a dare. I un-dare them."

#What he has found

In fourteen years: one clause granting a flashlight app the right to his contacts, declined;
one loyalty program that reserved the right to rename itself "at any time, for any reason,
including reasons of whimsy," which he accepted, approvingly, and printed; and one clause —
he would not name the company — that he describes only as "a sentence that should not be
possible in a document reviewed by counsel." He keeps it in a drawer. He would not open the
drawer. This publication has a documented weakness for
men with organized secrets, and we accept that he may have
been performing for us, and we accept that we loved it.

#Where the interview got away

At minute forty he asked about our terms. We told him, with some pride, that the arcade
has none — no accounts, scores stay in the browser, nothing to agree to.

This was the wrong thing to be proud of. What followed was a twenty-minute reversal in
which he interviewed us, gently, about what "no terms" means, whether silence is a policy,
and who our visitors think they're trusting when they trust nobody. We have notes. The
notes are mostly questions. The interview was scheduled for one hour and ran two and a
half, and the second half was ours to answer for.

#Findings

We went looking for a curiosity — a man with an unusual hobby, good for eight hundred
words. We found instead the last participant in a ritual the rest of us abandoned: the
reading of the thing before the signing of the thing. Every unread agreement on earth is a
room where one party stopped listening, and he is a man who goes from room to room,
listening, on behalf of nobody, for free.

He has never once needed it. He does not expect to. Lighthouses, again.

Status of subject: unverified, at his own request, pending our compliance with
amendment two.

Related: peer review: your grandmother's lasagna — the other
document in this publication's files that exactly one living person can truly read. And if
you'd like to feel what agreeing-without-reading actually is, wheel of torture
will spin you through four rounds of terms it never showed you, odds manipulated, all sales
final.

Risk assessment: saying "you too" to the waiter

He said "enjoy your meal." You said "you too." We assess the blast radius: the waiter, zero seconds; you, nine years and counting.

Hazard: reflexive reciprocation of a non-reciprocal pleasantry
Reference incident: "enjoy your meal" / "you too," a restaurant, 2017
Assessment requested by: the person who said it, at 2AM, several thousand times

#Hazard description

The waiter delivers the food and issues a closing pleasantry: enjoy your meal. The
pleasantry is one-directional. It has a sender and a recipient and no return path. The
recipient's mouth, operating on autopilot at conversational latency, selects the
all-purpose reply — you too — and fires it before the review board convenes.

The waiter is not going to enjoy your meal. The waiter is not going to enjoy any meal. The
waiter is at work.

#Likelihood

Certain. This is the finding that reframes the entire assessment: the event is not a risk,
it is a schedule. Our survey of available humans found no adult who has not done it, and a
substantial cohort who did it within the last month, including two respondents who did it
during the survey, to us, on the way out.

Adjacent strains are equally active: "happy birthday" / "you too." "Good luck with the
surgery" / "you too." At the gate: "enjoy your flight" / "you too," issued to an agent who
will remain in the airport indefinitely — a species of exchange whose asymmetry we last
charted in the dental chair, where at least one party had an
excuse in their mouth.

#Severity, by exposed party

The waiter: none. This must be stated clinically because the exposed population refuses
to believe it. The waiter has received "you too" upward of four thousand times. It does not
register as an error. It registers as weather — table six is raining slightly, move on.
Our interviews with service staff produced no memory of any specific incident, ever, from
any of them, and one waiter who confessed the reverse exposure: he once answered a
customer's "thank you" with "you're welcome, love you," and — this is the important part —
the customer doesn't remember that either.

You: nine years and counting. The incident of record occurred in 2017 and is still in
active rotation, surfacing at 2AM between other archived incidents, fresh as the night it
shipped. Severity is calculated not from the event but from the replay count, and the replay
count is not under anyone's control, and the replays have started adding detail that we are
not certain was in the original.

#Mitigations assessed

Prevention. Rehearsing the correct reply ("thanks") ahead of the pleasantry. Rejected:
the hazard fires below the rehearsal layer. In trials, subjects who pre-loaded "thanks"
said "thanks, you too."

Recovery. The mid-air correction — "you too... n't," or the appended "I mean, enjoy your
shift" — was assessed and is hereby prohibited. The correction converts a zero-severity
event for the waiter into a nonzero one, because now there is a conversation about it.
The original error is invisible. The patch is not. Ship the error.

Exposure avoidance. Never being spoken to kindly by staff again. Rejected on quality-of-life
grounds, though two survey respondents indicated they had already implemented it.

#Residual risk

Full. Residual risk is full. You will do it again — the schedule holds — and it will cost
the waiter nothing, and it will cost you a decade, and the exchange rate between those two
figures is the actual subject of this document.

#Findings

The 2AM review board that replays the incident has never once summoned the other party's
testimony, because the other party has none. The event you are serving a life sentence for
does not exist in the memory of its only victim. You are the sole survivor of an accident
that didn't happen. The board should note this. The board will not note this. The board is
you, and the board has never once ruled in your favor.

Filed without recommendation, except this: the waiter said enjoy your meal because it
was his job, and you said you too because some reflex in you wants strangers to have good
things, and of the two sentences, yours was the only one that meant anything.

Related: missing: one sock — another proceeding where the record
mattered more to one party than the universe. And if your reflexes need somewhere to file
their grievances at full volume, airplane invaders is boarding
forever, and nobody at that gate says anything kind.

The microwave clock is wrong and the household has adapted

Fourteen minutes fast since the outage of 2023. Everyone subtracts automatically now. Fixing it was proposed once. The proposal failed.

Site: one kitchen
Instruments: the microwave, the stove, one wall clock, and every phone in the house
Finding, in advance: the correct time does not exist in this kitchen and has not for
three years, and the kitchen is fine

#Background

During the outage of March 2023, every clock in the kitchen died together. The phones came
back on their own. The wall clock was reset against a phone. The stove was reset against the
wall clock, losing a minute in translation. The microwave was reset last, by a household
member who has never confirmed their involvement, using a source that has never been
identified, to a time that was fourteen minutes in the future.

Nobody noticed for two days. By the time anybody noticed, dinner had been cooked against it
twice, and it had incumbency.

#The current system

The kitchen now operates three official time zones:

Microwave Time (+14): the reference clock for cooking, leaving the house, and being
yelled to from another room. It is glanced at more than any other object in the home.

Stove Time (−3): consulted only to confirm that the microwave "is fast," a verification
ritual performed by residents roughly weekly, always with a small nod, as though the
situation were being monitored.

Actual Time (phones): present in every pocket in the room and somehow never the one
anyone uses, because the phone requires retrieval and the microwave requires only faith.

Every resident performs the subtraction automatically. This is the finding we want on the
record: four people of varying ages each carry a silent, involuntary, correct fourteen-minute
adjustment, applied hundreds of times a week, with an error rate of zero. Households
cannot agree on thermostats or what mustard is for, but this —
this they have synchronized perfectly, without a single meeting.

#The guest incident

In February a houseguest, seeing the microwave, believed themselves late, apologized loudly
to a room that hadn't accused them of anything, and left without their leftovers. The
household explained the system at the door, in the tone people use for explaining a dog's
rules. The guest has not returned. The leftovers were absorbed under standing kitchen law.

We flag this as the system's one genuine externality: Microwave Time cannot be exported. It
is a currency that works only inside the house, like the household's other institutions —
the light switch that does nothing, the drawer that requires the lift-then-pull, the chair
that is nobody's chair. A visitor cannot be onboarded in one evening. A visitor is not meant
to be.

#The reform attempt

Fixing the clock was proposed once, in the spring, by the youngest resident, on the grounds
that it would take eleven seconds. The proposal failed on three counts:

First, jurisdiction: nobody could establish who had set the clock, and therefore who had the
authority to unset it. Second, risk: every resident's internal correction is calibrated to
+14, and a corrected clock would render four well-tuned instruments wrong overnight — the
clock would be right and the household would be fast, which is worse. Third, and we quote
the senior resident in full: "we know where we stand with it."

The motion was not voted down. It was allowed to expire on the table, which is how this
household resolves everything, and the clock kept its lead.

#Findings

The microwave is not displaying the wrong time. It is displaying Microwave Time, correctly,
and has done so without drift for three years, which is a better record than the wall clock,
which loses ninety seconds a month and is somehow above suspicion.

An error, maintained long enough, with sufficient consensus, becomes a standard. The
household did not fix the clock because the clock stopped being broken the moment everyone
agreed on how it was broken. There is a lesson here about institutions, and about time, and
about the specific dignity of a family that would rather do arithmetic forever than have a
conversation about authority.

#Recommendation

Do not correct the clock. The clock is load-bearing.

Related: performance review: the Sun — the only
timekeeper this household trusts less. And for a chamber where the numbers are strict and
non-negotiable, stack bricks enforces its geometry with none of this
flexibility: the layers are 5×5, the clock is real, and nobody gets fourteen minutes.

Reporting station: a thermometer we left on the dashboard, which we now consider deployed
Broadcast area: everyone who has ever said "it's like an oven in here" and been right

#Current conditions

At time of broadcast the exterior of the region is experiencing a pleasant 84 degrees with
light wind. The interior is experiencing 145 and has opinions.

The disparity is stable, self-sustaining, and fully documented, and responsibility for it has
been formally assigned: see our annual review of the employee involved,
who was rated "does not accept feedback" and has evidently not accepted this either.

#Regional breakdown

The dashboard. The hottest inhabited zone in the region. Surface readings exceed our
thermometer's design limits, which we know because the thermometer now reads a temperature
in what appears to be a font it did not previously have.

The steering wheel. Currently classified ceremonial — an object that can be looked at
and gestured near but not held. Full-palm contact is projected to become survivable at
6:40PM. Until then, drivers are advised to operate using the regional standard two-finger
method, alternating hands, in the manner of a person handling evidence.

The seatbelt buckle. No. The buckle is the hottest object in the county. The buckle has
been storing heat since 9AM with the patience of a professional and it will spend all of it
on the side of your thumb in one transaction. There is no advisory for the buckle. There is
only the noise you will make, which the region has heard before.

The water bottle. Yesterday's water has completed its transformation and is now tea made
of nothing. Readings put the bottle at 118 degrees. It remains, technically, hydration, in
the way that the interior remains, technically, air.

The rear seat. A microclimate. Anything left here enters geological time: crayons
achieve liquidity within the hour, chocolate within twenty minutes, and a forgotten library
book develops a wave in its pages that it will keep for the rest of its life, like an
accent.

procedure is doors open, a sixty-second standoff during which you and the car both radiate,
followed by driving hunched forward so your back touches nothing, steering by fingertip,
breathing through your mouth like you're being introduced to it.

4PM–6PM: gradual moderation. The air conditioning achieves relevance around 4:15,
delivering its first genuinely cold air directly at whichever vent is aimed at nobody.

6:40PM: the steering wheel becomes touchable. This is the region's true sunset and the
only figure in this report anyone will act on.

Overnight: the interior returns to ambient and pretends none of this happened. By
morning it will feel neutral, even innocent, and by 10AM it will be doing it again.

#Records watch

Today ranks third all-time behind the incident of 2024 (a scented air freshener changed
state and the car smelled like a hot candle store for a month) and the incident of 2022 (a
sunglasses case on the dash left an image of itself, which remains, a shadow-fossil at the
scene of its own conclusion).

An oven mitt in the door pocket is the correct response and we are past being embarrassed
about it. The mitt is not a joke. The mitt is infrastructure.

Worse, then briefly better, then August.

Related: performance review: the Sun — the personnel
file behind this forecast. And if you want vehicles whose interiors are somebody else's
problem, nudge racer runs a full grid at sunset, windows down,
no buckles mentioned anywhere in the rules.

Holdings: nine thrillers, a calculus textbook that has never moved, and somebody's yearbook. Circulation is down. Morale, somehow, is not.

Institution: the little free library on the corner, the one on the post
Fiscal year: whenever we last did this to whenever we did this
Prepared by: us, uninvited
Audited: no

#Letter from management

There is no management. The box was installed by a household that moved away in 2023, which
makes this the only lending institution we know of that has been operating without any
governing authority for three years and has not once been the subject of an incident. We have
reviewed the corkboards of this neighborhood. We know what people are capable of. The box's
record is spotless and we cannot explain it.

#Holdings

At the close of the fiscal year the collection stood at fourteen volumes:

Nine thrillers, each cover featuring a man walking away from something. We shelved them
chronologically by explosion.

One hardcover about tidying up, donated — we assume — in triumph, and taken and returned
twice, which we read as two households making an honest attempt at becoming different
households, and then recovering.

One cookbook, spine uncracked, from a celebrity no longer described as one.

One copy of Calculus II. It has been in the box since our records begin. It has
survived two winters, one repainting of the box, and a complete turnover of every other
volume. It is the reference asset. It is the load-bearing item of this institution, a role
we have seen before in a refrigerator two miles from here, and we
know better than to move it.

One yearbook. Fontana High, 2004. We have questions. We have so many questions. Somebody
put a yearbook in a lending library — a book that can be meaningfully read by at most
forty people on earth, every one of whom already had the chance to own it. It is signed. We
did not read the signatures. We started to, and one of them began with "never change," and we
closed the book, because some archives are sealed for a reason.

#Circulation

Circulation is down eleven percent, a figure we invented, because the box keeps no records
and neither did we until now. Foot traffic remains strong. Browsing-without-taking remains
the dominant transaction, which in any other institution would be a crisis and here is the
entire point.

Notable movements this year: the thrillers turned over completely, as they do, in the manner
of a tide. The tidying book went out in January (resolution season) and returned in February
(also resolution season). The calculus textbook was touched once, by a teenager, who lifted
it, felt its weight, understood something about the future, and put it back.

#Community engagement

One note was found in the box in April, unsigned, on lined paper: "took the bird book,
leaving my favorite." No bird book was ever inventoried. No favorite was identifiable. The
exchange was conducted entirely on trust, between two people who will never meet, through a
box with no rules, and it worked, and nobody involved thought it was remarkable.

That note is the annual report, really. The rest of this document is us coping with it.

#Outlook

The post is leaning. Four degrees, maybe five. Nobody owns the post, so nobody can fix the
post, so the lean will proceed on schedule, and we project the box has two to four years of
verticality remaining unless a stranger with a level and no standing intervenes, which — on
this street, based on this year — we now rate as likely.

Guidance for next fiscal year: nine thrillers, give or take. The calculus textbook holds.
The yearbook stays sealed. Somebody's favorite is out there circulating and we will not be
told which one it was.

#Dividend

There is no dividend. There was never going to be a dividend. You put a book in the slot and
you walk away richer, and we have consulted people who understand markets and they have asked
us to stop calling them.

Related: missing: one sock — the other great institution of the
unsupervised commons, with worse outcomes. And for a lending economy with none of this
patience, wheel of torture will take everything you have in four
rounds and call it television.

Peer review: your grandmother's lasagna

The methods say "season until it looks right." Results could not be replicated by anyone now living. Recommend acceptance anyway. Forever.

Manuscript: "Lasagna" (untitled; the title is ours)
Format: index card, both sides, then up the margin
Submitted by: the estate
Reviewer: one grandchild (conflict of interest declared below)

#Summary of submission

The manuscript describes a procedure for producing a lasagna. It is forty years old. It is
written in two inks and one pencil, and at some point it was folded into quarters and carried
somewhere, and we would like to know where, and we never will.

The card asserts that the procedure "serves 8." We will return to this claim.

#Major concerns

The methods are not reproducible. The manuscript instructs the reader to "season until it
looks right." No definition of right is offered. The reader is presumed to know, and the
presumption is the problem, because the one person who knew is the one person who no longer
holds office hours.

Quantities are given in nonstandard units. The sauce requires "enough." The cheese layer
calls for "more than you think." The garlic is specified as "some, then some more, then stop
being a coward." These are not measurements. These are judgments, issued by an authority, and
the authority is not available for consultation.

The oven temperature is missing entirely. In its place, the manuscript says "you'll know."
We do not know. We have never known. We ran the procedure at 350, 375, and 400 degrees, and
all three produced a lasagna, and none of them produced the lasagna, and the difference is
not detectable by instruments. We checked. We bought instruments.

#Minor concerns

The yield claim of "serves 8" could not be validated. In three supervised trials the
manuscript served four, four, and three respectively, with all participants declining to
explain where the rest went. We suspect the original figure of 8 was only ever achieved under
the direct supervision of the author, who enforced portions by looking at people.

There is a stain on the lower left quadrant of the card. We tested nothing. The stain is
evidence, and it is also sauce, and we have decided it is load-bearing and will not be
removing it.

#Attempted replication

Three trials, conducted over four months, using the author's own pan, which the estate
released to us under conditions we agreed to without reading — a lapse we have owned publicly
in our interview with a man who would not have made it.

Trial one followed the card exactly and produced a competent lasagna with nothing wrong with
it, which is the most damning result possible.

Trial two attempted to correct for nostalgia by having a participant eat it in the author's
kitchen, at the author's table, at 1PM on a Sunday. The participant reported it was closer.
The participant was then quiet for a while.

Trial three added more garlic on the theory that the coward line was directed at us
personally, across time. This produced the best result to date, at approximately 85% of
reference, and we now believe the missing 15% is not an ingredient.

#Conflict of interest

The reviewer ate the reference lasagna approximately two hundred times between 1994 and 2019
and is therefore the least objective person alive on this topic, and also the only qualified
one. Both things are true. The editors will have to live with it, as we do.

#Decision

Accept. No revisions. Revisions are not possible.

The manuscript is not a set of instructions. We spent four months treating it as one, and it
is not one. It is a recording of a person — her thumb on the scale, her contempt for
measuring cups, her certainty — formatted as a recipe because a recipe was the only document
type available to her. The methods are unreproducible because the method was her.

We recommend the card be laminated, and we recommend it never be transcribed, because the
transcription would fix the errors, and the errors are where she is.

#Recommendation to readers

Run the procedure anyway. Fail at it on purpose, at 85%, forever. It keeps better that way.

Related: the office fridge: an archaeological survey — food as a
record of people who are not coming back. And if you would like to be judged that harshly by
something you are feeding, feed the baby: it also will not tell you what
it wants, and it also expects you to know.

We published a phone number. We should not have published a phone number. The store has responded with a laminated document.

We owe a hardware store an apology.

When we published the Action Jack dossier, we mentioned that one
of the women who claims to know him provided a phone number, and that the number rings a
hardware store in Fresno. We noted the store "would like it to stop."

It did not stop. It got worse. It got worse specifically and measurably because of us.

#What we did

Before publication, the store was receiving what the manager described as "a few a month.
Mostly nice." After publication, the store received, in the first nine days, one hundred and
forty calls.

We would like to be clear that we did not print the number. We printed the existence of the
number, which we believed was different. It is not different. We have learned that it is not
different. Somebody found it in under an hour and the rest was arithmetic.

#The policy

The store has a policy now. It is laminated. It is taped to the register at a height that
suggests it is read aloud frequently. They have asked us to reproduce it in full, and we are
doing so without edits, including the part about us.

REGARDING THE MASK

This is a hardware store.

We do not know anyone called Action Jack.

We cannot pass on a message.

There is no message. There has never been a message.

We do not know why you have this number.

Regarding the mask: we do not sell it, we have not seen it, and asking a follow-up
question does not change any of the above.

If you are calling about paint, please say "paint" first.

The website that started this has been contacted.

They have not called back.

We had not called back. We have now called back. Point 9 has been retired and we are told
this required a fresh lamination, which we have offered to pay for. The offer was declined
in a tone we would describe as final.

#Marisol

The store's position is handled almost entirely by an employee named Marisol, who did not
apply for this and has become, by attrition, the world's leading authority on the subject.

She keeps a binder. We asked to see the binder. She said no. She then described the binder
for eleven minutes, which we think was the more damaging option and which she may not have
intended.

The binder has categories. There is a category for people who are crying. There is a
category for people who are certain. She says the certain ones are harder.

"They don't want information," she told us. "They already have information. They want me to
confirm it. And I can't confirm it, because it's a hardware store, and they take that as
confirmation."

#The thing she said at the end

We asked, as we were leaving, whether she personally thought there was anything to it.

She restocked a shelf for a while. Then she said this, and we have transcribed it exactly:

He was in here Tuesday.

We asked her to clarify.

She did not clarify. She said the register camera covers the register, that he paid cash, and
that she is not going to be the reason this continues. Then she asked us, politely, to buy
something or leave.

We bought a tape measure. It's a good tape measure.

#Findings

The number is real. The store is real. Marisol is real and is owed a great deal by people who
have never thanked her.

We do not know what happened on Tuesday. We are not going back to find out, because the honest
truth is that our going back is the entire problem, and there is a version of this where a
small business in Fresno spends the next decade answering a phone because a website thought
something was funny.

So: please stop calling the hardware store. If you need paint, they are excellent, and you
should say "paint" first.

If you need to do something with the feeling instead, go walk into the labyrinth
and be pursued by your own doubts for a while. At least those have the decency to be yours.

#Communication — Does not meet expectations

The Sun broadcasts constantly, on every available channel, at a volume that cannot be
adjusted by the recipient. This is not communication. Communication requires a return path.

It cannot be muted. It cannot be marked as read. Attempts to establish boundaries — curtains,
blinds, a hand — are treated as obstacles rather than as feedback, and are outlasted.

#Teamwork — Concerns raised

The Sun does not delegate. Everything goes through the Sun. When asked to identify a single
task it had handed off in the review period, it named none.

The Moon has raised a concern. We have logged the concern. We want to be careful here because
the Moon's concern is, on inspection, that it does not get to do anything by itself and that
everything it is known for is technically borrowed, and our read is that this is a Moon issue
rather than a Sun issue. But it is in the file now and the Sun should be aware of it.

#Receptiveness to feedback — Does not meet expectations

This is the section.

In July, the Sun was asked, informally and pleasantly, to bring it down in shared spaces.

It escalated.

We want to be precise, because this will be referenced: the request was reasonable, the tone
was warm, and the response was thirty-nine consecutive days of the worst behaviour on record.
The Sun's position, when we finally got it in a room, was that it had not been given a
specific number. We had not given it a specific number. We accept that. We would suggest that
a mature employee does not require a number to understand "please, we are begging you."

#Goals from last review

Goal

Status

Reduce intensity in shared spaces

Not met

Respond to at least one email

Not met

Take a single day off, as a gesture

Not met

Allow one (1) meeting to be held outside

Not met

#Self-assessment

Left blank.

Reviewer's note: "The Sun does not self-assess. I left the form on the desk for a week. It
faded."

#Promotion readiness — Not eligible

There is nothing above it. This has been explained to the Sun on four separate occasions and
each time it has received the news well, which the reviewer finds more unsettling than an
argument would have been.

#Reviewer's closing comments

It is very good at the job. I want that on the record before anything else, because
everything below it is going to read as ingratitude and it isn't.

It is very good at the job. It has never asked for anything. It has never been thanked, not
properly, not once, not by anyone in the entire history of the department, and it has not
mentioned this, and it will not mention it.

It is also the reason we cannot have the meeting outside.

Both of these are true and I have spent the review period discovering that I am not able to
hold them at the same time. That is my failing, not the Sun's. I have marked myself down
accordingly.

#Outcome

Retained. No action. Next review in one year, which the Sun will attend, early, without being
asked.

If you'd like to look at one from a survivable distance, we keep several in
master blaster. They are much better behaved out there, mostly because they
are extremely far away, which is a lesson the Sun has declined to take.

Related: the office fridge — another survey of a shared resource

A stratigraphic survey of a shared refrigerator. Layer four predates the lease. Layer six is load-bearing. Excavation was halted.

Site: shared refrigerator, break room, second floor
Excavation: one afternoon
Team: two, one of whom left at the forty-minute mark and has not discussed it since

#Methodology

We removed nothing. This is important and we want it understood before anyone reads further:
this was a survey, not a clean. Nothing was thrown away. Nothing was moved that did not move
on its own.

Dating was a problem. Carbon dating was unavailable to us, so we used the free newspaper lining
the crisper drawer. It is dated March 2019. We have taken this as our lower bound and we have
been conservative from there.

#Layer 1 — Active (0–2 weeks)

Top shelf, front. A yogurt. A salad in a clear container with a name on it in marker.

This layer is alive. Items here have owners, the owners are in the building, and the names
correspond to people you could go and speak to. Named items are respected absolutely — we
observed no incursion into a named container at any depth of the site. Whatever else is wrong
with this culture, it does not eat labelled food.

#Layer 2 — Transitional (2–8 weeks)

Top shelf, rear. This is where it starts.

Items in this layer still have names on them. The names no longer correspond to employees.
There is a yogurt marked K. K. left in March. The K. yogurt remains, front-facing, name
outward, and the name is doing all of the work — it is the only thing standing between that
yogurt and the bin, and it is winning, because nobody has the authority to decide that K. is
not coming back for it.

#Layer 3 — Anaerobic (2 months–1 year)

Middle shelf. Containers whose owners have been promoted.

We note a foil parcel of unknown composition, a takeaway box that has fused to the shelf at
three points of contact, and something in a jar that has settled into the shape of the space
available to it. The jar is unlabelled. The contents are amber. We did not open the jar and
we would counsel against opening the jar.

#Layer 4 — Pre-lease

Bottom shelf, rear left.

We checked the lease. The lease begins in 2021. There is material here that we cannot account
for under the terms of the lease. We have raised this with facilities and facilities have
raised it with the landlord and the landlord has said that the fridge came with the building.

The fridge came with the building.

#Layer 5 — Load-bearing

Bottom shelf, structural.

The survey ended here. A team member attempted to withdraw a single container from the base of
the bottom shelf and the shelf above it moved. Not the container. The shelf. Something down
there is holding something else up, and the arrangement has been stable for a period we cannot
determine, and we made the decision to stop.

This is the point at which the second team member left.

#The condiment door — a separate civilisation

The door does not follow the stratigraphy of the main chamber and must be treated as its own
site.

Six mustards. We counted twice. Six.

No mustard in this refrigerator has ever been finished. We can state this with confidence
because all six are between one-third and one-half full, which is not a coincidence, it's a
pattern, and the pattern tells you what mustard is. Mustard is not acquired to be eaten.
Mustard is acquired because a specific sandwich required it once, and then the sandwich ended,
and the mustard did not.

There is a hot sauce with a joke name. Nobody has ever laughed at it. It will outlive us.

#Findings

The refrigerator is not a storage device.

It is a mechanism for converting your food into somebody else's problem, slowly, over years,
with the door closed. You put something in it believing you will come back. You will not come
back. You will be promoted, or you will leave, or you will simply forget, and your yogurt will
become an archaeological feature, and one day two people with a clipboard will date it using
a newspaper.

#Recommendation

Do not clean it.

We want to be clear that this is our formal recommendation. Cleaning it would require somebody
to decide whose things get thrown away. That decision has been deferred by every single person
who has ever worked in this building, and after an afternoon on site we have concluded that
they were all correct to defer it, and we are deferring it too.

The K. yogurt stays. K. might come back.

Related: performance review: the Sun — another entity
nobody has the standing to confront. And if you'd like to watch a small creature demand food
that is eaten, immediately, without ceremony: feed the baby.

Range, plumage, territorial display, and vocalisation. He is always finishing. He has been finishing for eleven years. Conservation status: thriving.

Common name: the 6AM Gym Man
Range: every gym
Conservation status: thriving, unassisted

#Distribution

He is at every gym.

We want to address this at the top because it is the single most-asked question and the honest
answer is that we do not have one. Observers in different cities, on the same morning, have
independently reported him. The reports match. The shirt matches.

We are not proposing an explanation. We are recording the observation.

#Plumage

A shirt from a race. He did not run the race. The race was in 2014. The shirt has outlived the
event, the sponsor, and the charity it was raising money for.

Shorts with a built-in mesh liner, the existence of which he does not acknowledge and about
which no question has ever been asked.

Footwear is worn past the point of function and into the point of principle.

#Territorial display

Three items on one bench: a towel, a water bottle, a phone.

The towel is not for sweat. The towel is a flag. The bottle is not for water — it is full, it
has always been full, and it will be full when he leaves. These objects have never been used
for their stated purpose. They are a claim, staked at 6:02am, held for ninety minutes,
respected without discussion by every other mammal in the room.

#Vocalisation

The primary call is:

"you gonna use that?"

Field note: this is delivered while he is already using it. It is not a question. It is a
courtesy — the acoustic equivalent of a nod. The expected response is not an answer. The
expected response is to be startled and say "no, go ahead," which you will say, even if you
were going to use that.

The secondary vocalisation is the exhale. It is audible at forty metres. It is not for you.
It is not for anyone. It has been measured and it is louder than the machine.

#Social behaviour

He knows the staff's names. All of them. He uses them.

The staff do not know his name. He has never been asked and he has never volunteered it, and
at this point the asymmetry has calcified into something nobody can undo. He has been coming
here for eleven years. It would be unspeakably rude to ask now.

#Migration

None.

Arrive at 5:40 and he is finishing. Arrive at 6:30 and he is finishing. Arrive at any hour on
any day of any year and you will find him in the same state, which is finishing.

He has been finishing for eleven years. No observer has recorded a start. No observer has
recorded a departure. We have him only ever in the final set, wiping down a machine he is
about to use again.

#Predators

None.

Attempts by management to introduce a competing schedule — a 6am class, twice, in 2019 and
2023 — failed both times. The class did not displace him. The class dissolved around him, the
way water goes around a rock, and the instructor started saying good morning to him by name
within a fortnight.

#Observer's note

We are required to include personal observation and we have been putting this off.

On the last morning of the survey he held a door for me. He said good morning. He used my name,
which I had not given him, and which he had presumably learned by listening, over months,
carefully, while I had spent the same months writing him up as a specimen.

He then went and did his last set, which was not his last set.

I have thought about it all week. The field guide stands. I would like it noted that the field
guide is not fair.

#Related observations

Other resilient organisms in shared habitats:
the office fridge, which cannot be removed for structural reasons.

And if you want to be somewhere at 6am where the hostility is at least honest about itself,
the labyrinth is open, and nothing in it has ever learned your name.

Who is Action Jack?

He wears a pink ski mask. He may own this domain. A concerning number of women claim to know him personally. We investigated and learned nothing.

We are going to do this properly. Corkboard, red string, the works. Here is everything the
arcade knows about Action Jack, presented without conclusion, because there isn't one.

#The mask

Pink. Ski mask. Not a balaclava — a ski mask, which he has reportedly corrected people on.
Not tactical pink. Not a muted, dignified, gear-catalogue pink. The pink of a novelty
birthday cake.

The obvious question is whether he skis. Nobody has ever seen him ski. Nobody has ever seen
him near snow. The mask is worn indoors, at sea level, in July, by a man who has never once
explained it and appears mildly annoyed that you asked.

There is a theory that the mask is the whole answer — that Action Jack is a normal person and
the mask is doing all of the work. Tone is cheap. Mechanics are expensive. A pink ski mask
costs eleven dollars and buys you a decade of speculation.

This theory has never been tested, because to test it you would have to find him.

#The women

This is the part where the investigation gets away from us.

An unusual number of women claim to know Action Jack. Not to have met him — to know
him. The distinction matters and every one of them draws it unprompted. They do not agree
on his height. They do not agree on his voice. Several of them describe, independently and
in nearly identical language, that he "was very calm about the whole thing," which raises
the immediate follow-up question of what thing, to which the answer has consistently been
a change of subject.

One described him as "a great listener." One described him as "the only one who came back."
One provided a phone number that rings a hardware store in Fresno. The hardware store has
been contacted. The hardware store says they get this call a lot and would like it to stop.

No two accounts are compatible. All of them are delivered with total confidence. This is
either a hoax of impressive coordination or the least likely thing about him is that he is
one person.

#The athlete hypothesis

Somebody, at some point, said the word athlete, and it stuck to him permanently.

The evidence for Action Jack being a professional athlete:

The name is Action Jack

The physique, per multiple accounts, "tracks"

He allegedly caught something once

The mask, arguably, is equipment

The evidence against:

No league has heard of him

No sport has been named

The catch is unverified and the object is disputed (accounts range from "a phone" to "a
falling air conditioner")

Professional athletes have statistics; he has anecdotes

We contacted the sports. All of them. Not one had a comment. Several asked how we got this
number, which is a fair question we are not equipped to answer.

#The ownership question

Here is where it stops being funny.

cerebras.com has been privately held since 2015. Somebody pays for it. Somebody decided there
should be eight games here and a shelf for silly prizes. Somebody built the labyrinth
a room in the middle that the doubts cannot enter, which is not a thing you build for traffic.
It's a thing you build because you needed the room to exist.

Nobody has ever seen that person and Action Jack in the same place.

That's not evidence. It's the shape of evidence, which is worse, because it's the shape
that makes you keep looking. The domain's registration is a matter of public record and the
public record is a name and an address and it tells you nothing at all about why the baby
escalates or why the wheel apologises in that particular voice.

#What we actually know

Nothing. That's the finding.

A pink ski mask, a chorus of women with irreconcilable testimony, one disputed catch, and
an arcade that somebody is quietly paying to keep online. Everything else is a rumour wearing
a rumour's clothes.

He has never confirmed anything. He has never denied anything either, which the internet has
correctly identified as the more suspicious of the two.

If you see him, don't approach. Just note the time.

Update: we should not have printed the bit about the phone number.
The hardware store has a policy now, it is laminated, and
we are named in it.

Then go do something useful, like feeding the baby or flying into the
master blaster, and try not to think about the fact that somebody has already
beaten every game here and left no name on any of it.

Dental small talk: a transcript

He asks questions. You have a suction tube in your mouth. We analysed it with negotiation frameworks and found something unexpected.

Setting: the chair
Subject: you
Posture: hands folded on the chest like a Victorian corpse, which nobody instructed you to
do and which you do every time

#The structural problem

He asks questions. You cannot speak.

That's the whole situation and every other feature of it follows from that one fact. There are
four fingers and a suction tube in your mouth. Your jaw is being held open by a device whose
name you have never learned. You are being asked about your summer.

#Transcript

00:41 — "Any big plans for the summer?"

00:42 — [subject cannot respond]

00:43 — [subject produces a sound]

00:44 — "Nice, nice."

We want to draw attention to 00:43 and 00:44.

He heard something. He responded to it. It was not a word. It has never been a word. In the
entire recorded history of this exchange nobody has ever produced a word, and he has never
once failed to respond appropriately.

04:12 — "Where'd you go? Anywhere nice?"

04:14 — [subject attempts a two-syllable answer]

04:14 — [suction]

04:15 — [answer lost]

04:16 — "Oh, lovely."

He said lovely. He does not know where you went. You do not know where you went — the
suction took it before you found out.

07:30 — "You been flossing?"

Both parties know the answer. He can see the answer. He is, at this moment, physically inside
the answer.

The question is asked anyway. This is not information-gathering. Nobody has ever learned
anything at 07:30. It's liturgy.

#The parallel channel

The hygienist says nothing.

She has said nothing for the entire procedure and she knows everything. She knows about the
flossing. She has known since 02:10. She will not raise it, then or ever, and this restraint
is the single most professional conduct in the room.

#Analysis

We ran this against standard negotiation frameworks and it fails the first requirement
immediately. A negotiation requires both parties to be able to speak. Here, one party can
speak and the other party has a drill in their mouth. The literature calls this "asymmetric"
and then, in our reading, stops being useful.

So we went in expecting to find a hostage situation. We want to report that we did not find
one, and that we were wrong about the shape of it from the start.

#The turn

He does not need you to answer.

Read the transcript again. He is not waiting for information. He responds to sounds. He says
"nice" to a noise, "lovely" to nothing, and he does it on time, every time, with total
commitment. That is not a man failing to have a conversation.

That is a man producing a sound — so the room isn't silent. So you are not lying in a chair
in the middle of the afternoon with your mouth held open, listening to your own skull from the
inside.

Because that is what's on the other channel. That is what you get if he stops. The small talk
isn't small talk. It's the only anaesthetic he can administer without a form.

#Closing

11:02 — "Alright, rinse."

You have your mouth back. You have it back for the first time in eleven minutes and you have
full access to the entire language, every word of it, and what you say is:

"Thanks."

And he says:

"No problem."

And that's correct. That's the right exchange. Both of you have now said the only true thing
available, which is that something was done and it was kind, and neither of you is going to
make it weird by being specific.

Then you go out to the desk and pay a startling amount of money, which is the actual violence,
and which nobody mentions at all.

Related: a field guide to the 6AM gym man — another man who is
kinder than the observer expected and gets written up anyway.

If you'd rather be somewhere that is honest about wanting to hurt you, the wheel
is right there and it has never once asked about your summer.

A laundry room poster campaign, reproduced week by week. It acquires a photograph, a case number, a lamination, and eventually a correspondent.

Reproduced in full, in order, as they appeared on the laundry room corkboard of a building we
are not going to name.

#Week 1

MISSING
One sock. Grey. Ribbed.
Last seen entering the machine.
Answers to nothing.
Reward: the other sock.

A clean notice. Correct tone, correct length, a joke at the end to signal that the author
knows this is a sock. Nobody could have predicted what happens next.

#Week 2

The same poster. Reprinted. One addition, in pen, beneath the last line:

PLEASE

#Week 3

Now with a photograph.

The photograph is of the surviving sock, held up against a white door. It is not a
photograph of the missing sock. There are no photographs of the missing sock. This is
addressed in a caption:

(this is the other one. they are identical. that is the point.)

#Week 4

Paragraphs.

The poster has paragraphs now. It explains provenance — where the pair was purchased, when,
and by whom, and it is not the author. They were a gift. The poster does not say from whom.
The poster is very careful not to say from whom, and in being careful it says it.

#Week 5

The poster addresses the machine directly.

We are not going to reproduce this one. It is four hundred words and it is between him and
the machine.

#Week 6

New handwriting appears at the bottom of the poster. Neat, small, apologetic:

have you checked the duvet cover

#Week 7

The entire poster is replaced. The new poster is one line, centred, at a font size that
required the author to make a decision:

I HAVE CHECKED THE DUVET COVER.

#Week 8

A QR code.

We scanned it. It resolves to a photograph of the inside of the duvet cover.

#Week 9

A case number appears in the top-right corner: SOCK-001.

No authority issued this case number. There is no authority. He issued it himself, to himself,
and then formatted it, and the formatting is the part we cannot stop thinking about — the
hyphen, the zero-padding, the implication of a SOCK-002.

#Week 10

Laminated.

#Week 11

FOUND

IT WAS NOT IN THE DUVET COVER. I WANT THAT ON THE RECORD.

IT WAS BEHIND THE MACHINE. THE MACHINE HAD IT. THE MACHINE HAS HAD IT FOR ELEVEN WEEKS.

I WAS RIGHT.

Below it, in the neat apologetic handwriting:

congratulations

Below that, in his:

THANK YOU.

#Findings

The sock was behind the machine. It was behind the machine the entire time, which means it was
behind the machine in week 6, when a stranger who owed him nothing took the trouble to suggest
the duvet cover, and it was behind the machine in week 7, when he shouted at her about it in
72-point type.

She congratulated him anyway. He thanked her in capitals, which we have chosen to read as
volume rather than anger, because by week 11 capitals were simply the language he was
operating in and there was no longer a lowercase available to him.

Eleven weeks. One sock. One correspondent, who was wrong, and who was the only person in the
entire building who tried.

We have no recommendation. We would just note that SOCK-001 implies a series, and that the
corkboard is still there, and that he now knows how to laminate.

Related: dental small talk — another exchange where the person
being difficult turns out to be the person being kind.

If you have a grievance of your own and nowhere to file it, feed the baby:
it is the only party in this arcade that will accept everything you give it and never once ask
you to check the duvet cover.
